The match took place at Denham Golf Club on a grey, overcast day with little wind. Julie Dempsey and Anne Messer of Huntswood GC, fresh from their Bucks Shield victory, played against Elizabeth Bennett and Sharle Norton of Ellesborough Golf Club. Julie and Anne were giving 1 shot to Liz and Sharle. The 7th hole was out of play due to an irrigation project so the match was played over holes 1 to 7 and 8 to 18, with the 1st hole serving as the 18th hole of the match.
Liz and Sharle went 2 up after 2 holes but by the 5th the match was back to a/s with some long puts holed. Despite finding sand on the 6th and catching the lip on exit Liz and Sharle won the 6th.
On the 8th Julie Dempsey had a near hole in 1 with her tee shot ending up mere inches from the hole. Well played Julie!
Both pairs fought had over the next holes and again the 14th the match was a/s again. The shot was given on the 15th. Julie chipped close to the pin with the 3rd shot with the Ellesborough going through the green, allowing their opponents to halve the hole with a 5.
On the tricky 16th Liz and Sharle found the green with their tee shot and won the hole with a par but Julie and Anne fought back to square the match on the next hole and this was the score after 17holes.
Going down the 1st again, and avoiding the robot grass cutter, Liz and Sharle won the final hole.
The match was played in a very friendly spirit.
Our thanks to Janet Beale for acting as the match referee and to Denham Golf Club for their generous hospitality on the day.
The winners were Elizabeth Bennett and Sharle Norton of Ellesbourough GC.
Monica Tillotson & Bendra Byrne (Gerrards Cross GC), with Maura Spencer (President)
The Summer Greensomes final between Monica Tillotson and Brenda Byrne from Gerrards Cross GC and Sue Cooke and Amy Watters from Harleyford GC took place on a wet mild autumn day at Ellesborough GC on 14 October 2024. It had been raining all morning but by the time we went out to the 1st Tee the rain had stopped.
Sue and Amy were giving 5 shots and it was nip and tuck all the way to the 16th where there was never more than 1 hole between the players. Monica and Brenda then went 2 up on the 16th par 3 hole and successfully closed out the match on the 17th hole.
The closely contested match was played in good spirit and thanks go to Maura Spencer (County President) for braving the cold along with Gill Redman who joined the match at the 9th hole to support the ladies to the end.
Thanks also go to Rosemary de Lacy for acting as referee.
The Players and officials sat down to a welcome tea with Victoria Sponge Cake,
followed by the presentation of the prizes and cup to the winners by Maura Spencer (County President).
Thanks go to the staff of Ellesborough GC for hosting the final and their generous hospitality.
