County Championships – 1st Day

We had a very exciting first day of our WAGR accredited County Championships which are being held on Thurs 8th, Sat 10th and Sun 11th May at Buckingham GC.

On the 1st rather chilly morning of the competition, the course record which previously stood at 71, was smashed by Ella Butteriss (Beaconsfield) with a gross 67! In the morning round, many 1st drives were close to the 1st green, with Colette Lonergan closest, but in the afternoon, Eliose Feely actually reached the 1st green of the Par 4 with her drive.

22 players took part in the Seniors Scratch Championship, where we had a dramatic tie - Mo Dawson (Buckingham) and Denise Goodacre (Burnham Beeches) tied on a gross 79, which resulted in a play-off. However this was complicated by the fact that Mo was playing in the 36 holes, whereas Denise had only signed up for 18 holes. Denise kindly opted to stay on and wait several nail-biting hours for the 36 holers to come in. It was gone 6pm when they finally headed off down the 1st - Mo for the 3rd time that day. Mo held her nerve and managed to get on the green in 2, holing her 2nd putt for a par, thus beating Denise to become Seniors Champion. Congratulations to both ladies!

Bernie Howe (Buckingham) won the Seniors 18 hole Handicap prize with an impressive nett 69. In addition, Bernie won the 36 hole Handicap prize with a Level nett score of 142 over 2 rounds, thus qualifying for the Scratch knockout where she will meet Ella Butteriss tomorrow. Shannon Holt (Gerrards Cross) came 2nd in the 36 hole Handicap prize on 144 (+2).

Ella Butteriss won the 36 holes Scratch with a gross score of 140 (2 under), which puts her top of the leaderboard for the knockout competition. Ella also won the Intermediate Prize. Sommer Chan (Woburn) came 2nd on countback on +9, with Amelia Curtis (Lambourne) in 3rd place

The knockout stages will take place on Saturday and Sunday – with 8 players in each of the Scratch and Nett Competitions, before we crown our Champions on Sunday evening.

Many thanks to Buckingham GC for hosting.
