Challenge Cup - 2023

Winner - Shannon Holt (Flackwell Heath GC) & Runner-Up Bernie Howe (Buckingham GC)

The Challenge Cup Final took place on a slightly damp and gloomy autumn day at Harewood Downs GC on 18 October 2023. The finalists were Bernie Howe from Buckingham GC and Shannon Holt from Flackwell Heath GC. The match was refereed by Rosemary de Lacy and Bernie was giving Shannon 6 shots.

Both players got off to a slightly nervous start, with neither hitting the fairway on the first but they both soon settled down and the first nine holes were tightly contested with some great shots played by both competitors. Bernie was 1 up at the turn and there was never more than one shot in it for the whole match. After the turn, Shannon took advantage of a shot hole on the 12th and moved ahead only for Bernie to get it back to all square on the 15th. The last three holes were again tightly contested but Shannon managed to win the 16th and held on to win the match 2up. The closely fought game was played in great spirit and the forecast rain largely stayed away which was a bonus.

Players, caddies and officials then sat down to a lovely afternoon tea of sandwiches and scones followed by the presentation of the prizes and the trophies.
