The Bucks Team Celebrate
The Bucks team celebrate their win on the steps of the Mentmore clubhouse

The first day of County Match Week started with fine weather, so one of our prayers had been answered.

Our first match was against Oxfordshire and we sent out an early message with our first foursomes pairing of Gemma, our lowest handicapper, and our County Champion, Evie, and they led the way with a 6&5 win. They were closely followed by Zoe and Julia who won 2 up.  Unfortunately our last pairing narrowly lost and so we went into the afternoon 2-1 up.

Sadly Evie who as our Champion led the way in the afternoon, lost but three quick wins followed, including a good 4&3 win from our "rookie” Denise.  Gemma who was our rear guard, finished early with an 8&7 victory so the match against Oxfordshire was won fairly comfortably 6-3, so a great start to the week.

Day two was against Northants who had won the tournament last year and although we had beaten them at Worcester in the day match, we still wanted this win as they were perhaps considered the favourites.

The morning foursomes got off to a shaky start with our first pairing losing, but the other two came good and again we had a 2-1 lead. The afternoon started with 2 wins and then 3 losses, so we needed the last match to be in our favour and Zoe didn’t let us down and won a tough match 2&1, so the final result was 5-4.

Wednesday we played last year's hosts Worcestershire and Herefordshire and again lost the first foursomes, but yet again managed to win the other two and be 2-1 at lunch.

I’m not sure what went wrong in the singles but we lost the first 3 matches, so were tied on 3 all.  Alice, another rookie, who had won with Anne in the morning, managed to win her match 2 up, so we just needed 1 more win but it wasn’t to be.  Charlotte managed a half but Zoe’s tight match just went the other way so our first defeat at 3.5-4.5.

After a good meal out on Wednesday night we arrived on Thursday ready to take on Berkshire. Unfortunately the weather had taken a turn for the worst with rain and high winds but we went off in our customary way by narrowly losing the first foursomes match and then courtesy of Anne and Alice, Luan and Evie we had our 2-1 lead.

For the singles Clara went out first and had a really tough match but won 2&1, so a good start.  We then lost the next two, followed by young Alice winning 4&3, so we just wanted the one more game and that came from Julia Gallagher who endured a real fight back from her opposition but managed her win, and the almost expected 5-4 win.

On the Thursday night we had made some changes to the original pairings and order of play due to Lydia being ill. Going in to the match against Warwickshire with a half match lead, we knew we could win the title if we won the day's match.  Easier said than done.  All looked good to start with as we won the first two foursomes and only lost the third pairing on the last hole, so again the 2-1 lead at lunch.

Clara lead the way again with an early victory and then things turned the other way for the next two games, making us tied on 3 all. Charlotte who had been down for much of her match and went out fifth, managed to turn it round and win 2&1.  We then heard the other scores from the other teams and knew we only needed a half point from the other two games.  Then Alice got the half and we thought we had won, but we needed to be certain so all eyes were on Zoe who again had the tail end responsibility, and she managed a great half, so yet again we had won 5-4 and were Midland South Regional Champions, the only team with four match wins.  A great win for a great squad.
