BATTLE OF THE GIANTS  -  12 December

Below is the report of the Mail on Sunday Final, as reported on 25th November in The Mail on Sunday:-

Champions Sundridge Park win the battle of the giants at El Rompido

IT had been billed as the battle of the heavyweights as former champions Ellesborough and Sundridge Park fought their way through to the final of The Mail on Sunday Classic.

And it proved to be an unforgettable climax to mark the 20th year of the event, producing one of the best finals ever.

In the end two golfers at very different stages of their careers combined to give Kent club Sundridge Park their second win in the world’s biggest golf club team competition to add to their victory in 2008.

Dutch Seniors star Tita McCart turned a three hole deficit into a 2&1 win over Ellesborough’s Clara Leathers and Nancy O’Connor, 18, won four holes in a row to beat talented England Under-18 squad member Alice Kozlowski 5&3.

With wins from Lucy Speed, brought in to spice up the team for the final, and the ever consistent Kent stalwart Kim Morris, Sundridge Park secured the title with a 4-1 victory.

Afterwards Nancy O’Connor explained how McCart played a crucial role in her win. ‘I have been having problems with my putting and Tita came up to me when we were on the practice ground at El Rompido and gave me a few tips and it made all the difference.’

O’Connor, who studies education at Brighton University, added: ‘It’s so good at my age to be playing in the same team as such a great player as Tita. You only have to watch her swinging the golf club.’

McCart, now 52, a member of Royal Hague as well as Sundridge Park, was a successful Dutch international in the early 1990s, but has had a new lease of life as a senior.

An IT expert at the Royal Brompton Hospital, she won the Dutch International Seniors Championship in 2010 and again this year and last year won the Dutch Seniors Matchplay and Strokeplay Championships.

She said: ‘I spend a lot of time at the weekend in the Channel Tunnel, going between the UK and Holland, but I am really enjoying my golf. And to be part of this team and win The Mail on Sunday again is a highlight. This was a final as it should be. We all had tough matches. It is impressive enough to win once, but to do it again is remarkable.’

In the semi-finals Sundridge Park had beaten Yorkshire’s Willow Valley 3-2 and Ellesborough had beaten Scottish champions Hamilton 4½- ½.

"M on S" FINAL RESULT  -  22 November

The ladies team from Ellesborough failed at the final hurdle in today's Grand Final of the Mail on Sunday competition held at El Rompido in Spain. They were beaten by Sundridge Park from Kent by 4 - 1.

The mens' final was won by the Scottish team from Kintore who beat Millbrook, 3½ - 1½.

NEWS OF ELLESBOROUGH IN "M on S" FINALS   -  20 November

Ellesborough ladies are in Spain for the final stages on the Mail on Sunday competition being held at El Rompido. Today in the semi-finals:-

Ellesborough beat Hamilton (4½ - ½) & Sundridge Park beat Willow Valley (3 - 2)

The Grand Final between Ellesborough and Sundridge Park will be held tomorrow. The BCLGA wish the Ellesborough ladies every success in their bid to win the trophy that they held in 2005.

Fifteen ladies have represented the Ellesborough team since the 2012 campaign started in January and the fortunate ones who are in the team to play in Spain are from left to right:-

Lois Shoosmith, Alice Kozlowski, Cathy Armstrong, Clara Leathers, Jess Burrows & Steph Gough

The team had a lucky escape in the quarter finals in Manchester. After 8 wins in succession to reach that stage, it was sad that quarter final winners had to be decided on points won in the previous rounds. Ellesbororough were due to take on Druids Heath, from the Midlands, but play was abandoned due to the atrocious weather. The rules of the competition had to be brought into use which saw Ellesborough coming out on top.

In the mens' competition the results of today's semi-finals were:-

Kintore beat Farthingstone (19th) & Millbrook beat Chester-Le-Street (3 - 2)

GEMMA FINISHES SEASON WELL  -  18 November

Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh, a student at Tulane University, New Orleans finished her fall season on a high note with an excellent three under par final round of three-under-par 69 at the Alamo Invitational in St Antonio, Texas. Gemma finished 25thon a three-over-par total for her three rounds (74-76-69).

Gemma’s final round of 69 included an eagle and six birdies. Unfortunately it also included a double bogey 5 on the par three 15th following a run of three birdies, having had to wait for 30 minutes on the tee, and a bogey on her final hole, the sixth and a bogey on the second following her eagle on the first.

Having had a run of rounds where three-putting has kept her from contending it was a welcome bookend to the fall season.

Overall Dryburgh is ranked 80th in the latest Golfstat US women's college rankings based on scoring average, with a scoring average of 73.75. However, the Scot is ranked 20th in fairways hit in regulation and 50th in greens hit in regulation. Had her putting been up to the same standard over the last six rounds, Gemma would be much further up and that will be her focus between now and February.

MAIDEN WIN FOR GEMMA IN USA  -  27 September

Gemma with the Trophy
Gemma Dryburgh with the trophy from her maiden victory

Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield) recorded her maiden NCAA Division 1 win yesterday at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational, Mississippi, shooting 8 under par, 208 with 3 sub par rounds of 69,70 and 69. Tulane were in second place and, had their Finnish freshman, Emily Penttila (who hadn't qualified but was playing as an individual and shot four under) been in the team, they would have won.

In shooting 8 under Gemma broke the Tulane University 54 hole scoring record. In doing so she beat two of USA's top Curtis cup players. She bettered Ashleigh Albrecht of University of Kentucky by 9 shots and Emily Tubert of Arkansas by 11.

An excellent performance by Gemma and the perfect start to her college season. Following this win Gemma was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week. For more details of Gemma's achievement, click on the links below:-

However the second qualifying round was abandoned before play began because of high winds and torrential rain.

RACHEL ENGLAND'S TOP SCORER  -  29 March

Well done to Rachel Drummond (Beaconsfield) on her fine performance for England in the European Nations Championship in Spain. Below is the text of the report on the event as published on the EWGA website on 24th March:-

Rachel Drummond is England’s top scorer in Spain

24 March 2012

Buckinghamshire golfer Rachel Drummond was England’s top scorer in the women’s event at the European Nations Championship at Sotogrande, Spain.

Rachel (Beaconsfield) played the last two rounds of the 72-hole event in one-over par and finished 14th on the individual leaderboard. Her level par 72 in the third round was one of the best of the day, when the wind blew and the greens were hard – and only two players managed to beat par.

The wind continued into the final round, when the cold conditions were worsened by rain and waterproofs were the order of the day. Rachel signed off with a one-over 73 and was disappointed not to score better.

Meanwhile, Rachael Goodall (Heswall) tied 19th, two shots further back, finishing her campaign with rounds of 76, 80. In the third round she had reached the turn in one-under par but, to her dismay, dropped shots on the way home as she struggled to find the best positions to attack the pins. In the final round, it was the front nine which proved costly but she came back well on the way home.

Nikki Foster (Pleasington) was 34th after a battling week and played steadily in the final round to returned 78, which counted towards the team score. Overall, England finished 10th out of 11 teams, having crucially lost ground in the second round.

GPS ALLOWED AT NATIONAL LEVEL  -  15 January

The following article was published on the EWGA website on 9th January:-

Go-ahead for DMDs in all English women’s competitions

09 January 2012

Distance measuring devices (DMDS) are to be allowed in all English national women’s championships and competitions, with immediate effect.

Until now, competitors have been allowed to use DMDs in English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) events at club level. However, they were not permitted in national championships, nor in the regional and national finals of handicap competitions.

Many players found the situation confusing and EWGA received many questions asking why DMDs were not allowed in all its competitions and, specifically, why men could use them when women could not.

After giving full consideration to the matter, the EWGA Operational Board decided that DMDs could be used in all its events. The decision was made at the board’s final meeting before the association merged with the English Golf Union (EGU) to form England Golf. The EGU already allows the use of DMDs in all its events.

Individual county women’s associations will continue to make their own decision about whether or not to allow the use of DMDs in their events.
