GPS MEASURING DEVICES RULING
- 8 February 2010

A reminder of the position regarding Distance Measuring Devices:

COUNTY COMPETITIONS:

At the B.C.L.G.A. Executive Meeting on 3rd September 2008 it was agreed to allow the use of GPS and other measuring devices in competitions:-

"In competitions a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect her play (e.g. gradient, windspeed, temperature, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used."

N.B. This new ruling came into effect for competitions starting from 1st October 2009. Their use is not allowed in the County Championships or County Week or ANY JUNIOR COMPETITIONS.

EWGA  RULING:

Also a reminder that as from 1st January 2010 EWGA has decided to allow the use of distance measuring devices in EWGA medals, Australian Spoons and the PING four ball better ball tournament at club level and where there is a local rule in place allowing the use of DMDs.

However, EWGA will continue not to allow DMDs for all regional* and national competitions.

EWGA NEWS OF HARRIET - 3 February 2010

Well done to Harriet Beasley who is mentioned in despatches in the EWGA Newsletter, published on 2nd February. Complete with photograph the following article appears:-

" Woburn's Harriet Beasley was pipped on the 20th hole in the final of the First Flight competition of the Doherty/Jones Challenge Cup tournament at Coral Ridge Country Club, Fort Lauderdale - the third event in Florida's Orange Blossom Tour for lady amateurs. Harriet was among a group of Sterling University students playing on the tour. "

The only disappointing part of Harriet's trip was the fact that the first half was spent in waterproofs! Harriet is now back in England, about to return to Sterling for the second semester of her second year at the University.

WINTER FOURSOMES UPDATE
- 15 January 2010

Due to the prolonged spell of bad weather the following directive was sent on 14th January to the players still involved in the Winter Foursomes knockout competition:-

" The adverse weather conditions have resulted in course closures across the county. Even if the snow melts within the next day or two, which is not forecast, opening the courses may be delayed due to the bad/dangerous ground conditions. An extension will therefore be granted to round 3 which was due to be played by January 19th. This extension is limited to ten days from the day one of the courses where you are members reopens for play. Well draining courses on lower ground may be open several days before those on higher ground and this may mean a change in venue but Executive believe it is paramount to play the matches as soon as the weather and ground conditions permit. "

COUNTY LUNCH CANCELLED
- 13 January 2010

The decision has been made to cancel the County Lunch which was due to be held tomorrow at Harewood Downs. Today's snowfall means that we have been finally beaten by the weather.

As there was some respite in the weather at the weekend and beginnining of the week, it was hoped that the Lunch could go ahead and plans were made for the car park to be cleared of snow today. The new snow, which is still falling has had the final say.

The practicalities of trying to arrange another date are such that the Lunch is cancelled rather than postponed to another date.

For those who were waiting for the County Handbook, which would have been distributed at the Lunch today, for the details and Entry Forms of all the Competitions and Meetings for the year ahead, do remember that all this information is already available on the website.

USE OF DMD's IN EWGA MEDALS
- 12 December 2009

EWGA have relaxed their ruling with regard to the use of Distance Measuring Devices. Below is the text of the statement that was issued by EWGA and appears on their website:-

Distance Measuring Devices in EWGA Events

At a recent meeting of the Golf Forum, the R&A and home unions (apart from the EGU) continued to oppose the use of distance measuring devices (DMDs) in their competitions.
At EWGA we are aware that the decision not to allow DMDs in all EWGA competitions has caused a number of problems, especially at club level.
We know that many clubs have already adopted a local rule to allow the use of DMDs in club competitions but their women have not been allowed to use the devices in EWGA medals.
EWGA has decided to allow the use of distance measuring devices in EWGA medals, Australian Spoons and the PING four ball better ball tournament at club level and where there is a local rule in place allowing the use of DMDs.
However, EWGA will continue not to allow DMDs for all regional* and national competitions and we continue to advise counties strongly not to allow the use of DMDs in their competitions.
The change will take effect from 1 January 2010.
Emma Lowe (
Championship Manager)
* This will include Medal Finals, regional and national finals of the Australian Spoons and the PING Plate and Grand finals

The BCLGA will continue to allow the use of DMDs in the county knockout competitions and Leagues. They will not be allowed in the County Championships or in County week.

JUNIOR NEWS

It's official! Girls' golf is getting better and that is reflected in the new handicap limits for the English U15 & U13 Championships. From next year the limit for entry to the U15's will be 18.4 (previously 20.4) while the limit for the U13's will be 20.4 (formerly 24.4). The Championships will be played at Market Rasen, Lincs., from 27th to 29th July.

There is a new look for the Englsh Girls' (Under 18) Campionships. The 2010 Championships will trial a new format when it changes to a 72-hole strokeplay competition. Traditionally it was played over 5 days and consisted of two rounds of strokeplay qualifying, followed by matchplay in two flights. Next year's Championships at Seacroft, Lincs, will be played over 3 days from 27th July. The entire field will play 18 holes on each of the first two days before a cut is made for the final day's 36 holes. The change reflects the growing interest in strokeplay among young players, many of whom are planning careers in professional golf. The U15 & U13 Championships have been strokeplay events for the last 4 years.
