A month's rainfall fell in the 12 hours preceding the event which led to some very challenging conditions, resulting in generally high scoring. The round of the day was that of Holly Small and Fiona Thompson (Ellesborough) who shot a gross 79, nett level par 75.

There was some consolation in the fact that the Bucks. flag will be kept flying by the Mens' team from Woburn who beat Cosby to take a place in the semi-finals.

The Finals' Day of the Bucks. Shield which is now in its 80th. year, was held at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club on Monday 20th August. From the 30 clubs that entered four very strong teams played their way through the early knock-out rounds to reach the Finals' Day. The majority of the players in the semi-finals had single-figure handicaps and it was very good to see that a number of the players are either juniors or had recently been part of the junior section of the county - a testimony to the hard work put in by the clubs and county over the past few years.

In the morning semi-finals Ellesborough were too strong for Burnham Beeches and in a close match Woburn had the upper hand over Beaconsfield. Ellesborough continued their good form into the afternoon and by the half-way stage they were ahead in five of the seven matches. Some stunning golf was played - Fiona Thompson (Ellesborough) and Sarah Mace (Woburn) halved a hole in eagle! Cathy Armstrong (Ellesborough) playing off a handicap of seven, went through the turn nine holes up having played one under par for the front nine.

Ellesborough were the strongest team on the day and took the title for the sixth time, having last won the Shield in 2004. The BCLGA are most grateful to the Buckinghamshire Golf Club who were splendid hosts for this prestigious event. Despite the appalling weather conditions this summer the course was in immaculate condition and everyone was made to feel most welcome.
