- 17 December 2009

On Sunday 13th December the Elite Junior Squad met at Mentmore GC for their county training. The day started with BB&O Academy Coach Noel Rousseau giving a talk on golf psychology which included participation from the girls.

Next Lucie Smith took the girls into the dance studio and gave them golf specific exercises, which included warm up, strength, endurance and flexibility work with exercise bands and gym balls. This session finished with a cool down and each girl received an exercise programme which is a six week plan to work on at home.

The day ended with a nutrition talk, a demonstration and tasting session including ideas for snacks to carry while playing.

The squad thoroughly enjoyed this informative session and had many laughs especially with the gym ball work.

Below is an extract from the latest issue of EWGA's monthly electronic newsletter:-

It's official! Girls' golf is getting better and that is reflected in the new handicap limits for the English U15 & U13 Championships. From next year the limit for entry to the U15's will be 18.4 (previously 20.4) while the limit for the U13's will be 20.4 (formerly 24.4). The Championships will be played at Market Rasen, Lincs., from 27th to 29th July.

There is a new look for the Englsh Girls' (Under 18) Campionships. The 2010 Championships will trial a new format when it changes to a 72-hole strokeplay competition. Traditionally it was played over 5 days and consisted of two rounds of strokeplay qualifying, followed by matchplay in two flights. Next year's Championships at Seacroft, Lincs, will be played over 3 days from 27th July. The entire field will play 18 holes on each of the first two days before a cut is made for the final day's 36 holes. The change reflects the growing interest in strokeplay among young players, many of whom are planning careers in professional golf. The U15 & U13 Championships have been strokeplay events for the last 4 years.

In the first of the last round of Junior County Week matches, Herts beat Berks by 4 matches to 3.  Bucks therefore needed to beat Oxon in their match to take the trophy. In a closely fought contest the Bucks girls narrowly missed out - with three wins under their belt they couldn't quite achieve the 4th win required, losing two of the matches on the 18th.

Herts finished the week in first place with 5pts from Bucks and Oxon with 3pts - Bucks came second on countback having 11½pts from the individual match wins to Oxon's 10pts.

In the triangular match between the three counties in the Midlands South Division (Berks, Bucks and Oxon) the winner was Oxon with 3pts from Bucks with 2pts. Oxon go on to represent the BB&O counties at the Midlands South County Finals where they will play the winner from Northants, Warwicks and Worcs/Heref.

On the final afternoon the Stableford Foursomes competition was held with all 8 girls in the squad playing, with the best 3 scores to count. Equal with 113pts were Bucks and Oxon. On countback, using the score from the fourth match, Bucks came out on top to take the trophy - a good consolation prize for just missing out on winning the overall week and the BB&O triangular match.

Well done to the Bucks girls for their fine play during the week and for being such good ambassadors for our county.

For full details of all the match results go to the "Junior County Week" section.

Both the afternoon matches at Junior County Week at Mentmore were halved:- Bucks v Herts & Berks v Oxon. The highlight of the afternoon was an albatross on the Par 5 eighth hole by Flora McPhail from Oxon.

Tomorrow morning sees the final matches:- Bucks v Oxon and Berks v Herts. Currently Bucks and Herts are tied in joint first position and so there is all to play for. The afternoon session will be the Foursomes Stableford competition.

For full details of the match schedule and results to date go to the "Junior County Week" section.

Congratulations to Ashley Cramond from The Warwickshire Golf Club who beat Katherine O'Connor from Tadmarton Heath Golf Club in today's final at Buckingham Golf Club, to become the first ever Midlands South Regional Champion.

The morning semi-finals saw Bucks Junior Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield) put up a good defence against the top qualifier Ashley who came through to win the match by 3 & 2. The second semi-final was an all Oxfordshire affair with Katherine beating the Oxfordshire County Champion, Jane Binning (Frilford Heath) by 2 &1.

The final was a closely fought contest, going all the way to the 18th - only the second match to go the distance. On the 18th tee, 15 year old Ashley was one up - both girls had great drives and the approach shots left Katherine with a slighly longer, but uphill, putt. Having secured her par Ashley was then left with a tricky length putt to halve the hole and win the match.

On Sunday 22nd March we held a Bucks County girls pre-handicap golf competition at Wycombe Heights Golf Centre. The weather was sunny, although not too warm, where several new girls all played very well over 9 holes on the Par 3 course. There were lots of prizes awarded for good play, depending on the scores, and the winners were Sophie Rhodes, Taylor Dangerfield and Joanna Jones who all went round in less than 50 shots.

Please go to the "Junior Contacts" page for details of the Junior Committee who will be pleased to hear from anyone wanting information on Pre-Handicap events.

Junior Girls at the Academy Day
The Juniors at the Academy Day at Wycombe Heights

The Men and Ladies Golf Unions organised, under the Golf Partnership, Academy days for young golfers under the age of 16. The first of these was on Sunday 8 March at Wycombe Heights led by lead coach Noel Rousseau and his two assistants James Bronham and Charles Dean.

Myself and Jen Marshall, County President, were very impressed. We were there for 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon (different players) and apart from the extreme cold it never felt like 4 hours. The girls all appeared to enjoy it and we had no complaints (apart from the cold when we were on the putting green). We had 10 girls in the morning and 4 in the afternoon session.
