Bucks went to County Match Week at The Worcestershire Golf Club with 12 squad members who were a mixture of experienced players, 5 juniors and 5 rookies some with higher than normal handicaps for first team selection but every one of the squad had shown commitment to the County and had earned their places. Some of our lower players couldn’t be there for the full week due to other unavoidable commitments. We were lucky to be able to field a strong team each day but also to give everyone some sessions off to avoid the risk of over playing as five straight days of 36 holes are tough.

We started the week by playing the defending champions, Northamptonshire, and we had a great result, winning 5½ - 3½. Lydia Johnston, one of our rookies showed our intent by winning her singles 6 & 4.

On the Tuesday we played possibly one of the top 3 favoured teams and that was Warwickshire. In the morning foursomes we halved two matches and lost one, so all to play for in the afternoon. Gemma Dryburgh led the way with a win but two losses followed. So with the score at 4 - 2 we needed to turn it round, but the last three matches out were really close at the finish and all ended in halved matches so we lost 5½ - 3½.

We went into Wednesday’s match against Berkshire with our County Champion, Jess Burrows and our low handicapper, Gemma Dryburgh having gone home. We were still very confident despite the loss the day before and we managed a 2 - 1 lead after the morning foursomes. The atmosphere in the afternoon was very tense. With a strong challenge by Berkshire we lost the first two matches, but rallied and got the three wins we needed to take the match 5 - 4.

Our next opponents on Thursday were the host county Worcestershire & Herefordshire.  A win was possibly expected but anything can happen when nerves start to fray. We won the foursomes two and a half to a half. Charlotte West, our youngest player at 13 and a rookie, kept her 100% record going with another foursomes win with Harriet Beasley, following those on previous days with Julie Cooper and Susanna Mitterer.

In the afternoon the home team came out fighting and got two and a half points quite quickly but a quick win by Clara Leathers who was out last, turned the match in our favour. It was then left to our other rookie, Evie Ing with a 4 & 3 win and a very tight halved game for Zoe Fitz-Costa to give us a well deserved 5½  - 3½ win.

The final day dawned and there were four of the six teams each with three wins, Northants, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Bucks. Northants had to play Warwickshire and we had a very tough task against Oxfordshire. With wins in the foursomes for Harriet and Susanna of 6 & 5 and Annabel Dimmock and Steph Gough 2 Up, we got the 2 - 1 start that surprised the Oxfordshire side. In the afternoon Zoe lead the way with a 2 & 1 win. And that was followed by other wins by Harriet, Charlotte and Annabel with Susanna getting a half, so a great last day’s result of 6½ - 2½. We knew by now that Northants had beaten Warwickshire so it came down to games won and Northants had 28 to our 26, so they were champions for the second year running.

Although we just missed out on becoming regional winners for the very first time by a very small margin, all the squad were winners and the team spirit we had all week was awesome. Our thanks go to those ladies who managed to make the journey and support us, or caddy for the girls. It was a privilege to be Captain of such a great squad. With the support of so many people the success was a real team effort and it was a week that I will never forget. Brilliant!
