WOBURN RETAIN BUCKS SHIELD -  1 October

The Bucks Shield Finals Day was played on Friday 30th September on the Dukes Course at Woburn Golf Club. There was some superb golf played throughout the day in very hot and sunny weather.

The first semi-final to finish was between Woburn and Datchet. The Home side took the honours but very well done to Dachet on reaching the Finals' Day, a great effort for a club with a small Ladies section.

The other semi-final between Buckingham and Burnham Beeches finished in dramatic circumstances. With the match situation at 3 games all, the final match went to the 20th hole. Well done to Margot Sharp, the Buckingham Lady Captain, for coming from behind to take the match into extra holes, and then to sink a long putt to take Buckingham into the final. Commiserations to Burnham Beeches who were the unfortunate losers of a very hard-fought match.

The final was therefore between the two northern clubs, Buckingham and Woburn. Again there were some extremely close matches, with an incredibly nail-biting end to the match. With the match score at two games all, matches 1 and 2 had gone into extra holes. The first match was eventually won by Woburn on the 21st hole with a birdie. The second match also went to Woburn on 19th hole to take the title. With the 7th match having gone to all square after 17th hole the match could not have been closer.

Hard luck to Buckingham but well done to all their players for taking the match to the wire, a great performance considering Woburn were playing on one of their home courses.  The victory meant that Woburn have now won the Bucks Shield for the third year in a row, a feat done three times before in the history of the competition:- by Burnham Beeches in 1972-1974 and by Denham twice, in 1996-1998 and 2001-2003.

The full results of the 2011 Bucks Shield can be found in the "Competitions - Knockouts" section.

MAIL ON SUNDAY SUCCESS -  2 July 2011

Well done to the ladies teams from Huntswood and Woburn who have reached the seventh round of the Mail on Sunday competition. Congratulations also to Magnolia Park who did extremely well, with such a small Ladies section, to reach the sixth round.

Bucks therefore have two out of the 32 clubs left in this national competition for Men and Ladies, which has grown from having 700 teams when it was launched in 1993 to over 3000 clubs. The matches are five singles matches played off handicap.

Best of luck to both teams as they try to emulate the success of Ellesborough who won the competition in 2005 having beaten Stirling in the final at El Rompido, Costa del la Luz in Spain.

CADDIE DEFENITION & DUTIES -  2 July 2011

The County Delegates have been sent a copy of a Memo from EWGA that was originally sent to clubs in September 2009. The Memo covers the defintion of a caddie and the staus of a Trolley Puller. Below is the text from this Memo:-

" The EWGA Handicap Committee has been asked to clarify the status of a Trolley Puller.

Please see Rule of Golf Definition of a Caddie: quote "A "caddie" is one who assists the player in accordance with the Rules, which may include carrying or handling the player's clubs during play"

The Rules of Golf do not contemplate a Trolley Puller, anyone carrying or pulling a trolley is a caddie. To limit the actions of a caddie, for example by preventing them going onto the green, or attending the flag, is a modification of Rule 6-4. The Conditions of Competition may prohibit caddies altogether, or may restrict who may act as a caddie, but they cannot otherwise limit the activities of a caddie. "

The Definition of "Caddie" is detailed in the Rules of Golf 2008-2011 (page 31-32).  In addition, Decision 6-4/10 (on page 108 of the "Decisions on the Rules of Golf 2010-2011") highlights some of the acts which a caddie may perform without the authority of the player:-

" Decision 6-4/10 - Acts Which Caddie May Perform
While the Rules do not expressly so state, the following are examples of acts which the caddie may perform for the player without the player's authority:
1. Search for the player's ball as provided in Rule 12-1.
2. Place the player's clubs in a hazard — Exception 1 under Rule 13-4.
3. Repair old hole plugs and ball marks — Rules 16-1a(vi) and 16-1c.
4. Remove loose impediments on the line of putt or elsewhere — Rules16-1a and 23-1.
5. Mark the position of a ball, without lifting it — Rule 20-1.
6. Clean the player's ball — Rule 21.
7. Remove movable obstructions — Rule 24-1."

RACHEL WINS MAJOR TROPHY -  26 April 2011

Well done to Rachel Drumond (Beaconsfield) on winning the prestigious Roehampton Gold Cup, a 36 hole strokeplay tournament for the country's top amateurs plus professionals.

Roehampton Gold Cup Winner
Rachel Drummond with the Roehampton Gold Cup

Below is the text from the article that was posted on the EWGA website on 19th April:-

" Buckinghamshire’s Rachel Drummond scored a two-shot win in the Roehampton Gold Cup - with the help of a borrowed putter.

The 21-year-old from Beaconsfield had mislaid her own putter but was able to borrow one from one of the club’s professionals. It did the trick and she invested in the same model at the shop at the end of the day.

Rachel scored 72, 71 for a 36-hole total of 143 and reclaimed the trophy for the amateurs after several years of domination by the professionals.

The runner-up was 15-year-old Charley Hull from Woburn who achieved a course record 68 in the morning, followed by a 77, for a total of 145.  Third amateur was Sophie Madden from West Essex on 150 and fourth Curtis Cup player Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) on 151.

Henni Zuel, a member of the Ladies European Tour, led the professionals with two rounds of 73 for a 36 hole total of 146.  She was followed by defending cup holder Sophie Walker (Forrest Pines) on 148 (75,73) on a countback from Corisande Lee (West Lancashire) also on 148.

The parkland course, with a par 72 was set at 5966 yards. Much remodelling in the past year and the re-siting of most of the bunkers gave the field of 60 plenty to think about. The course was in excellent condition and the players found the going very tricky on the fast greens and in the thick rough. CSS went up one to 75 for both rounds. In 2012 the event will take place on Saturday April 21st."

EWGA MERGER VOTE IN AUTUMN -  5 April 2011

Below is the text of an article posted on the EWGA website on 5th April:-

" Merger vote expected in autumn 2011

A vote on a possible merger between the English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) and the English Golf Union (EGU) is likely to take place in the autumn of 2011.

EWGA chief executive Jim Robinson told members at their annual meeting that the proposal is in the final stages of preparation.

The main features of the proposal have been agreed by the boards of both organisations, with a small number of technical matters outstanding.

Once these have been resolved the proposal will be printed and circulated to members of both organisations. It will also be posted on both the EWGA and EGU website and there will be an on-line facility for members to ask questions.

The EWGA is planning a communication programme which will include roadshows and other forms of presentation to inform club delegates and county representatives about the proposals and enable them to report back to members.

The final decision on the proposal will be made by the voting members of each organisation – the counties – at simultaneous general meetings. It is anticipated that these meetings will take place in September or October. A majority of 75 per cent in favour at both meetings will be necessary to approve a merger.

EWGA county representatives have been briefed on the progress so far and members seeking more information should, in the first instance, contact them. "

N.B. All the County Delegates have been sent this information and so please contact your Delegate if you have any queries. If they are unable to answer your queries they will in turn contact our EWGA County Repesentative.

They played very steady golf on the front nine and took full advantage of their shots. Jane and Julia were giving 9 shots and found themselves five down at the turn.

After losing the 10th hole Jane and Julia then fought back really well. From 6 holes down after 10, with the help of a couple of birdies, they got back to 2 down with two to play. The 17th hole was the last of the shot holes and Sarah and Claire scored a net par to halve the hole and take the match, 2 & 1.
